Letterpress Book

Typography & Print (2024)

Summary

This project combined traditional letterpress printing techniques with linocut illustration, utilizing lead type and a 1910 letterpress machine.

The process began with typesetting, where I researched and wrote a description related to the class book theme. I carefully selected a typeface and composed the paragraph, paying close attention to line length and layout. I then illustrated my subject, transferring the design to a linoleum block using a marker transfer technique.

After carving the block, both the text and illustration were locked up in a chase for printing. The final prints were created using a registration template to ensure accurate alignment. The pages were bound using a traditional stab binding method, completing the project with a handcrafted book that reflects the precision and craftsmanship of letterpress printing.
